However, before you do any of that you should get a sense of how the room is going to look, what type of things are going to be in it, etc. Then you can come up with a room sign that you can apply to the room and see if it looks good.

I agree, but you are probably taking your signs elsewhere. I would suggest taking them to a local park, a local museum, a local historical society, or a local city hall. A lot of places in the US host an open house for free, and they are great for a few reasons. You don’t have to pay for anything and most of them are open daily. There’s also the fun of seeing your sign in a different light.
I’m not saying you have to go out and buy the signs, but I would suggest that you take your signs to a local park, museum, historical society, or city hall.
Cool room signs are the latest craze in the US, and they are so cool that I even bought some myself. My first reaction was that I’d never seen anything quite like it. I was pretty impressed. I saw similar room signs in France, but I always found them very boring.
